2016 SMFoLD Workshop
Oct. 28, 2016, Loews Hotel, Hollywood
in conjunction with the SMPTE 2016 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition
The workshop brought together key stakeholders in the light field capture-to-display ecosystem to understand the use cases, state of development and needs for standards around the streaming of light field data from source to display.
The workshop discussed the value of a consortium to help in light field streaming media standards development by providing
- Liaison between various standards bodies
- Offering a clearing house of relevant ecosystem information
- Facilitating development of standards with active participation in standards bodies and related activities
At the workshop event, key stakeholders summarized activities at various standards bodies, detailed the use cases and needs of light field acquisition, streaming and display. The event concluded with a discussion of the need to form a consortium to facilitate standards and ecosystem development.
The workshop is being organized by Insight Media with support from an SBIR contract called Streaming Model for Field-of-Light Displays (SMFoLD); Open Standard for Display Agnostic 3D Streaming (DA3DS). Funded by the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), the contract was awarded to Third Dimension Technologies and Oak Ridge National Laboratories.
