Workshop on Streaming Media for Field-of-Light Displays Announced

A new workshop on streaming media will be held on Fri., Oct. 28 at the Loews Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles, following the SMPTE® 2016 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition (SMPTE 2016). The workshop is designed to provide an update on standardization efforts and commercialization needs related to the light field capture-to-display ecosystem, and to explore the needs for the formation of a consortium to help facilitate standardization of field-of-light streaming media.

To date, any group working with light field images, data, and display has had to develop proprietary formats, processing, and transmission protocols. The aim of this workshop is to explore how standards may assist with development and commercialization efforts.

Call for Speakers:

Speakers at the workshop are being asked to present a summary of key issues in various parts of the capture-to-display ecosystem, including several vertical markets such as cinema, virtual reality, Department of Defense, Government and gaming, along with activities at standards bodies such as JPEG, MPEG, the IEEE, SMPTE, and WebGL. Those that can provide a neutral summary of needs/use-cases in vertical application markets are invited to submit their ideas to chris@insightmedia.info.

The workshop is being organized by Insight Media with support from the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers® (SMPTE®). An SBIR contract called Streaming Model for Field-of-Light Displays (SMFoLD); Open Standard for Display Agnostic 3D Streaming (DA3DS) is being funded by the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) for further support of the workshop. The contract was awarded to Third Dimension Technologies and Oak Ridge National Laboratories.

Registration for the workshop is now open at www.smfold.org.
